Thomas Jones Clinch 1800 Tennessee & Kentucky

By Jackie Zortman April 07, 2008 at 05:56:58

Interested in any info on Thomas Jones Clinch b. ca. 1800 who is said to have been a foundling given back to the white people by the Native Americans somewhere on the Clinch River. He was a small child and didn't know his parents.A Jones family took him to raise and named him Thomas Jones Clinch for the river. He had a son named Elijah W. Clinch who married Nancy Elizabeth Blankenship. They had two daughters, Mary F. and Maggie Darcus Clinch.Elijah's Civil War pension lists his name as Swafford, E. W. (alias) Clinch, Elijah. He applied for pension in 1891 and appears in the Taylor County, KY census in 1900 again as Elijah Clinch. Both Mary and Maggie were married to my great grandfather, James Alexander Taylor. My grandfather only knew his stepmothers as Swafford.Appreciate any info.I have noted that there are many Thomas Jones Clinch and Elijah W. Clinch names listed as being from England. In later years, Maggie and Mary went by the surname of Swafford and their death certificates lists their father as Elijah Swafford.
