Keith, initially I thought as you do but I am not 100% sure. No matter how far back I go I am finding
- CODDs/CODEs in Wiltshire, Kent and Suffolk
- COWDs in Hampshire and Shropshire
CODYs and CODEs in Ireland and Lancashire I am not finding before 1750.
COODs are also in Prussia.
Now it is clear that COAD(E) and COODE are very old names with derivation in the Cornish language. They are found from at least the 1350s in Devon.
It's possible CODD was due to an early emigrant, but it could be a quite separate name. Similarly, CODY and CODE in Ireland could be from a celtic root - though given it doesnt seem to go back very far, once again it's probably an emigrant.
