About 100 or so years after that event , there was much imigration of the CODD family from Wicklow, Ireland to Canada. In transit, many became CODE and many others became COAD. Almost none retained the CODD spelling.
It seems likely that the pronounciation of CODD was always with the long O - and thus , because spelling was largely phonetic, those who were recording names would have spelled it the way it sounded. Literacy was not widespread. Of the two CODD brothers who arrived in Canada around1820, and were in need of sending a letter to an official, THOMAS was able to sign his name(CODD) while JOHN had to sign with an "X".
So, COAD or CODE are likely interchangeable with CODD.
