I wish I could help you.I have only a very tiny amount of information on the Coby family. As I noted in my original post on this site (which I asked be established), my lone person so far in my own genealogy is Sally Coby, the wife of Isaac J. Lake.I only have her because their daughter, Emily (Lake) Rarick gives her mother's name on her death certificate.
I spent some time back in Yates Co. in September, trying to chase down leads on Sally, and really got nowhere.Isaac J. Lake m. three times, and he wasn't with Sally very long.I don't know if he took off and left her with family, or if she died young.I suspect that they started out in north-central Penn., south of the Horseheads/Elmira area of New York, and then he came north into Steuben and Yates Co.I'm inclined to believe that Sally died, because his kids seem to be with him in New York, and he had a brother in Yates Co. (James Lake).
I know that there was a pretty good concentration of people with that surname in the area around Baltimore, MD -- in fact there still are some.Today, there are only twelve people with that surname in all of New York, and at least two of them are people who assumed that name later in life to avoid certain kinds of discrimination based on the ethnicity of their original surname.
I haven't been aware of any Coby names in Virginia or W. Virginia, but if the family started out in Maryland, Virginia and W. Virginia would be logical destinations as they headed west.
This is a very, very small family, and it is going to be very difficult to do the research.Stay subscribed to this message board -- I can promise you it won't generate much mail in your inbox, and you never know when something might pop up as people check into it and review the messages.I haven't been on it in some time, so have no idea what might have been posted lately.Guess I should check in.
Good luck in your research.I'll let you know if I stumble on anything along the way.
