Cock (18C Scotland), Coke (19C Wales), McCock (post 1890) - ?
.
I'm looking for descendants of my mother's father's father's cousins, born around 1880 in England. It's a messy tale.
Andrew COCK, weaver, married Elizabeth Raitrie in Scotland sometime around 1670.
Andrew COCK 1687 married Catherine Paiss.
Charles COCK 1724 married May Monro.
James COKE 1759 married Jane Simmons in Neath, Glamorgan, Wales, where James was a solicitor and Portreeve.
Henry Simmons COKE 1811 married Eliza Gaitskell. He was also a solicitor. The family was very wealthy at this point.
Charles Henry COKE c1856 married Ada Lennox Monck.
Ada Lennox Monck was christened Ada Lennox Monck Hill in 1857 in Cornwall, along with her brother Ernest Augustus Hill, born 1851.Ernest Augustus Hill is the person my family knew for 100 years as Ernest Augustus Monck, my gr-grandfather, until I figured this all out about a year ago.Ada and Ernest changed their name before their 1875 (Ada) and 1883 (Ernest) marriages.I do not know how or why.It is the mystery of the Hill/Moncks that I am obsessed with solving.
Ada was an actress at the Adelphi Theatre 1870-71.Charles Henry COKE and Ada married in London in 1875 and had three children:
Henry Rossiter John Monro COKE, born 1879, Berkshire
-- in the Imperial Yeomanry as Rossiter M. McCOCK, 1901 (Boer War; his uncle Percy Knight Hale COKE was a major in the IY)
Violet L. Lennox COKE, born 1880, Cheshire (per 1881 census)
-- died 1896, Rugby, tuberculosis, as Violet Louie (Louise?) Lennox McCOCK, father recorded as Charles Lennox McCOCK
Jessie Frances Ada Monro COKE, born 1881, Cheshire
-- living in London in 1901 as Jessie F.A.M. McCOCK, born Scotland; a Miss McCOCK of the right age to be Jessie is shown on a passenger list as arriving in Portland, Maine, in July 1901, en route to Canada. A possibility.
Sometime after the birth of Jessie, Charles changed his own name to MacCOCK. Homage to his Scottish ancestors? On the run from creditors, or his marriage?
In 1891, Charles MacCOCK and his children Henry, Violet and Jessie are in Somerset with Charles's newer younger wife Clare. Charles says he was born in Scotland (he was born in Wales) and his wife and children were born in Canada (the children were not; the wife I have no clue about). The birthdates and names leave no doubt that these are the same people. The reason for the name change and false info is a mystery -- two name-change mysteries in one couple!!
I am in touch with modern-day Cokes descended from James Charles COKE, brother of Henry Simmons COKE, who controlled the copper trade in Wales and had interests (and wives) in Australia and Chile.(The copper trade is what seems to connect the two families: Ada's father from Devon/Cornwall was a copper agent, and her sister's husband from Wales was a copper agent.)
The modern-day Cokes know nothing of what became of Henry Simmons Coke's children.(I now do: Charles's brother Percy's son Percival Hale Coke became a bad poet; sister Eliza Frances married into the wealthy Anglo-Indian Lovett Cameron family; sister Jesse Jane married an Orr and was widowed young. But I can't find a single living descendant anywhere!!)
There are a few McCOCKS in US records, but they seem to date from earlier in the 19th century and so would be unrelated.
I'm sure that some day I'm going to actually bore someone to death, but I keep telling my tale in the hope someone recognizes something.I have recently discovered a McCOCK living in South Africa around 1950, and am trying to follow that trail up.(What you do not want to do is google McCock with the filters off ... and you can't do it with the filters on.)
If anyone who hasn't fallen asleep thinks s/he might know anything at all, I will be eternally grateful for the smallest crumb!
