Hi, there. If you haven't already found it, but the first (and only) record of George in Wilkes Co. is in 1787. He was living in Franklin County by 1788.
There is quite a gap in his residence because before that, he is last recorded in Amherst County, VA, in 1793, on the Virginia Early Census. However, I doubt that he was at home in VA for the whole year because 1793 was the last year of the war, and I just found that George Cockburn said in another man's pension application that he knew the man during the war, and this man was drafted in SC, and served in NC and GA (he even mentions Phillips' Fort, which was in Wilkes County). Therefore, George could have already been in GA before the end of the war (if not NC or SC). See my full analysis below:
