James would fit the description of a possible son of Patrick Cogburn. Patrick married Sarah Jack in 1805, so James would be the oldest. When Srah's father died, he only mentioned Pat & Sarah's girls, so we don't have the names of the boys, but we know they had males from the 1830 census. Let me recount a possibility for James:
after marriage he moved to Greene Co for a few years(court case as a witness,he & wife)then moved to Monroe Co. 1840 census has a James and Sarah Cogburn listed in Monroe. Patrick Cogburn died about 1832. The children listed for Sarah matched the 1830 census, more or less. Shortly after they moved to Hawkins Co. Sarah was mentioned in court cases as being from Hawkins. Can't find her there but county records have a James. About the same time there was a James in Greene Co for a few years. Difficult to say if they were the same James or not but I suspect they were. After finally moving to Hawkins James moved to Mo, where you have picked up the records. Obviously we have the James who married Jane Mercer in both Tenn and Mo. but remember what I have just recounted is just a theory of his whereabouts between 1828 and late 1840's and possible connection to Patrick. The possibility is the other James' may have been someone (or several people or combinations of the same and different people)else.
