Hello Ben
I think the Cogger family history is very tricky - i have been looking into it when i have had the time over the last few years - since i got a computer! The ones i have contacted are the most secretive, remote people - i like my privacy but hey...........I can tell you the goss i know................
cogger, cogman, coger - all relate - same as each other.it is a name that is linked with an occupation.........do you have the need to be by water? do you take long showers, do you like boats?well then if you do then you are a real cogger.......because it is a work related name - a cogger was a boatsman - cockswain - master of vessel. a cogger boat was a small boat and it was called cogger because of the wooden cogs used for steering and manouverability - god i think i spelt that wrongly.....never mind........the first account of these little boats was in italy used by the coggerio family - small fishing vessels not used for deep sea fishing...........so hence the connection to the sea and the linking of the name to england when maybe the romans took a bit of a holiday your way ....... you will notice there are bloody hundreds of coggers throughout kent - and i believe kent has a bit of water - rivers?and there has also been mentioned a thingy called the cogger clock - yep you got it - the old cog's in the wheel of time, so i think that the coggers worked with their hands and were really good craftsmen - my family has connections with horse and buggy's and furniture making including the piano forte building.....
one of the earliest mentioning of an ann cogger i have been able to find is in 1650- daughter of george cogger and math? westminster - st margaret - a christening i think - you know your history better than i ever would - lots of paper went missing in the plague and the great fires............
well i hope i haven't bored you stupid - and good luck with your search - contact me regardless - it's nice to hear from one of US - oh something spooky - they were deeply religious - proddy's c of e - lots were decons of the church and so forth - fine upstanding secretive and there is a long history of the masonic lodge involvment.
god i keep remembering things - a lot of the coggers left for better times to america when the irish potato famine forced a lot of them to invade england and things were tight - people of means left for new starts..........there are a lots of jewish connections in the american coggers - and fundamentalist christians - i have not had a great deal of time to go through them - have you tried the seventh day adventist church website for a trace?
my family came to australia - yep you can't escape the bloody aussies can you? not on the hells boats but as free citizens....
tell me about yourself!
bye
ann
