Am I too late to get in on this mystery?I hope not!for I too descend from Susannah Martin and her marriage to William James.
Here's the information I can throw into the mix...hope it helps, and I would really appreciate anything else anyone finds - don't you just love this?
"The identification of Susannah's mother, Mary Martin, as a Coggeshall is based on evidence in her husband's will.Joseph Martin named his wife Mary as the aunt of Daniel Coggleshall, executor of the estate.Witnesses to the will included John Coggeshall, son of Joshua Coggeshall, deceased; Jonathan Nichols, and John Anthony.Martin left sixty acres of land in Portsmouth to his grandson, Willam James. This land was bounded east on the highway, south partly on land of Thomas Cornell and partly by land belonging to the Quakers, west partly by land belonging to Daniel Vaughan, lately deceased, and partly by land of Joshua Coggeshall, partly by land of John Coggeshall, and partly by land of Thomas Nichols, and north by land of John Cory (Portsmouth Town Council, 2:256).This appears to be the same land he had originally deeded to William and Susannah James in 1696 for "love and affection."
"Mary Martin was almost certainly the daughter of John Coggeshall, who was listed as an immigrant to New England with a William James (not yet identified) in June 1632 (John C. Hotten, THE ORIGINAL LISTS OF PERSONS OF QUALITY....[1874; repr. ed. Baltimore, 1986], 150).Coggeshall and his wife Mary had a daughter Mary baptized at Castle Headringham, Kent, 22 June 1628, who was mentioned in her grandmother's will as living 16 April 1645 (TAG, 19 [1943-3]:132, REGISTER, 73, 1919:31).Mary, wife of Joseph Martin , died in September 1706, "age 80" (g.s.), indicating a birth date of about 1626.She and her husband are buried in the Coddington Burial Grounds (Richardson MS, NHS)."
This information comes from an article in the NEHGR; "The Family of William and Susannah (Martin) James of Portsmouth and Newport, Rhode Island: New Discoveries" by Mayra Myers and Daniel W. James, Jr. (p. 333, NEHGR, Vol 147, October 1993).
Any thoughts on this?or any more information? Thanks in advance!
