M.W. Colton, St. Charles, Ill., 1879
Saint Charles (Illinois) Review, Oct. 3, 1879
A Very Useful and Important Society.
There is an organization in this County, known as the Kane Co. Mutual Protection Society, which was first started in the year 1864; fifteen years ago, with the late James Burr, as president, and S.N. Wright, as secretary and Treasurer (who has held the same position ever since). It has a standing reward of $300 for the apprehension of any thief or thieves that have stolen any horse or mules from any of its members, and $25 for the return of the stolen animal to its owner.
The society in 1874 obtained a charter and became regularly organized under the State of Illinois. It at the present time numbers about 65 members. The officers are, president, William Marshall, St. Charles; vice president, M.H. Bisby, St. Charles; secretary and treasurer, S.N. Wright, St. Charles; trustees, E.A. Tefft, South Elgin; E.E. Garfield, Campton and H.I. Cranston, St. Charles; police officer, Isaac Barber, Campton and Thomas Cornwell, Campton. A. Burr and M.W. Colton, St. Charles, are deputy police officers.
There has never been a horse stolen from any member of the society since it was started, consequently there has been no occasion to make an assessment on any of its members, as there has always been quite a surplus of funds belonging to the society, in the hands of the treasurer. Those becoming members pay the small sum of one dollar.
Any man or woman of good moral standing, owning property in horses or mules, residing within the limits of Kane county, may become members.
