Be careful here because there is absolutely no proof at all that the James M. Compton born in 1810, husband of Nancy Poole, is the son of Thomas Compton and Rachel Smith. Actually, it is quite difficult for this James to be Thomas and Rachel's son James. Thomas and Rachel's son James would have to have been at least 20 years older than James M. Compton because he was out doing land deals (buying and selling) in 1810 when James M. was born.He may have been his father, the jury is still out on that one, but he surely isn't the same James. Myldred Ruth Lankford Compton worked long and hard on these two lines trying to tie them together and while it is true all of the descendants "claimed kin" to each other, no one could ever say exactly how these two lines tie together. This is why she, in her Clan of Comptons genealogy, listed the descendants of James M. Compton totally separate from the others. Myldred Ruth's line was that of John Compton (who married Amy Duvall). The John Compton line is not yet tied to Thomas and Rachel Smith Compton's line either. All three of these Compton lines lived together in the Enoree River area of Spartanburg and Laurens Counties and while I agree that there was probably some common kinship, we all still need to keep working together on producing some shred of evidence that some kinship exists.
