I have been reading your discussion.I supposedly descend from Hiram Compton, b. 1800 in Va, d. 1874 in Lawrence Co., KY. His son, Layne Compton, b ?1820, VA, is whom I descend, but I am researching this by visits to the Lawrence County Courthouse visits, 2 so far.So much to look for!Anyway,I have a copy of the "General Index to Marriages--Lawrence County, Ky."It lists:
No year given,Cumpton, Layne mar. Mary McDowell--Box 1
1848Cumpton, Mooremar.Ellen Chapman-- Box 1
1848Cumpton, Herndon mar.Celia Crabtree--box 1
1854Compton, Laynemar.Melsena Hatton-- box 1
1855Compton, Layne mar.Louisa Miller--vol. 2, p. 94.
1865Cumpton, Henrymar.Celia Cumpton--box 1
1870Cumpton, Jacob R.mar. Martha Kinner-- Box 5
1872Cumpton, Henrymar.Julia A. Cooksey--box 1
and so on........
Is Herndon Compton a brother or son to Hiram Compton?I don't remember, but I plan on looking for this marriage bond during my next visit to Lawrence Courthouse.
Now for the Lady Comptons
1850Compton, Nancymar. Hickman Davis--vol.2, p 30.
1853Compton, Amanda mar.Milville Hatton--vol 2, p. 61.
1864Compton, Susian F. mar.Abraham Hess--vol. 1A, p. 47.
1864Compton, Nancymar.John B. Compton--vol. 1A, p. 53.
and so on.......
I have not been able to look for most of these marriage bonds due to the lack of time spent at the court house, but I plan on a few more visits.I will be looking for land deeds and a will of Hiram Compton, listed earlier.
I found a Compton Cemetary on Blaines Creek Rd, off of Rt. 23 North of Louisa, KY.It containedHiram Compton, b. Nov. 15, 1800, d. May 5, 1874. Also, his wife,Margaret P. Compton, d. March 14, 1879.This is what their headstones shown. There were many other marked headstones with names and dates, for which I believe to be his/ their children and grandchildren.
Any elabortion on this information?I know Steve said earlier that he did not have any of Hiram's descendants listed. So hopefully, my next visit will prove more fruitful once I locate a few land records.

Would anyone have an earlier census from VA, (1830 Tazewell Co., VA census) that might give some clues as to his first marriage with possibly number of children?
