In reply to Mark- Yes, they were probably mostly related. The Comptons came in the the Mass Bay Colony, were soon disenfranchised because of their then heretical beliefs (anabaptist) and were followers of Anne Hutchinson and, more importantly, Lady Deborah Moody. William Compton followed her to RI then to Long Island (1640's)and NJ(1650's). The Comptons founded the first Baptist Church in the state of NJ. Their descendents emigrated from NJ to SW Va (Abraham and his brother)pre-Rev.Abraham was killed in the Revolution. His two sons struck out on their own when their mother remarried and ran off for the Clinch, living in hollow chestnut trees on the way. These are the antecedents of the Russell and Scott Co. Comptons at least- they are my people.
