Andrew Jackson Compton was the son of Reuben S. Compton (1804-1861) and Bathsheba Laboyteaux (1807-1892).A biographical sketch was published in the General Biographical Catalogue: The Western Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1827-1927.After attending local Fairview Academy for two years and then Farmers College, College Hill, OHfor three years, Andrew enrolled in the Eclectic Medical College, Cincinnati, OH, where he received a diploma in Latin in 1857.He married Amelia Jane Harris about this time.He next attended the Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA.This was followed by missionary work in Brazil in 1862.He lived in Bentonsport, Keosauqua Co., IA from 1863 to 1864.During the Civil War in 1865, he volunteered for service in the U.S. Christian Commission.
