For years researchers have placed Benjamin Wallace Compton (and his brother John Allen Compton) as a son of John and Polly Compton of Tazewell County based solely on the statement of Hannibal Compton in Comptonology years ago.Not one piece of evidence exists for Benjamin W. being the son of John Compton of Tazewell other than the statement by Hannibal. So now evidence supports that Benjamin W. was not the son of John Compton (which most die hard Compton researchers believed Benjamin W. was not the son of John anyway!) but the son of Thomas Compton of Russell County. Here is the evidence. 1.Death certificate of Benjamin W. Compton does not list his parents but states he was born in Russell County. That is where Thomas was living from 1810-1848.John Compton of Tazewell lived near current day Bluefied. Not even close to Russell or Dismal Creek where Benjamin would finally settle. 2.DNA.Benjamin W had a brother named William F. Compton.Hannibal Compton called him 'Uncle Billy who married Polly Sword'Descendants from this line have tested and matched with Russell County Comptons and not even close to the Tazewell County Compton line. 3.Tax lists of Russell County.Benjamin is on the 1842 Russell County tax list. This was taken just before he was married in Tazewell County. He left Russell went over the mountain to Dismal Creek and settled there.
If anyone has any paper evidence that links Bejamin Wallace Compton (or his brother John Allen) to John Compton of Tazewell I would love to see it. Otherwise I think it is clear Benjamin Wallace Compton and John Allen Compton were sons of Thomas Compton. It is going to be difficult straighten everybody out on this though!
