Joan,I have just recently gotten into this research.I see your message is 5 years old but I thought I'd still try to contact you.Josephine Conaway, daughter of Alfred and Pauline, has to be my great great grandmother's (Abigail's) sister. I have a list of brothers and sisters beginning with Josephine, 1852; Alfred W, 1858; Elonsifar, 1855; Alexander, 1861; Abigail, 1856; Elizabeth, 1866; Albert, 1867; and Theodore, 1868.(See My Trees.com000080 search number. Did Josephine and John reside in Plaquemines parish?
In RootsWeb.com there's a note under Alfred Conaway saying that he is listed in the 1860 Anderson county, Texas Census.
A RootsWeb.com query reflects James E. Conaway b: 4 NOV 1788 in South Carolina and Mary Pickett B: 14 jan 1802 in Humphreys, Tennessee.Alfred married 3 times.Pauline was his 3rd wife.If you get into MyTrees.com you can see the children from marriage 2 and marriage 3.Marriage 3 was to Pauline. So far, that's all I have on the Conaway side but Pauline's side (Hingle) goes back 6 generations to some of the oldest families in Plaquemines Parrish.
This is so interesting. If you have learned anything in the past 5 years since your message posting, please contact me.I will let you know if I come with anything regarding James and Mary.Have you looked in RootsWeb.com?
