Re: Condran's of Lebanon/Dauphin County, PA
Tim, everything about this family and their Census information is mixed up and confusing. I've spent quite a bit of time figuring it out. To answer your question, yes, the 1880 PA Census info you cited is the correct family. The 1900 Lebanon PA census where Annie Condran is listed as Head of Household with 10 names following (including 3 male borders) is messed up. I picture the enumerator questioning Grandma Sarah with all the kids and some adults all pushed against the screen door.
Let me just attempt to clarify the Census:
Annie Condran is the head of Household; the 3 children listed at the end of the group are Annie's children: Lillie M., Sarah E., and James Condran (though she is listed at being married for 2 years and the eldest daughter is already 5.
Edward, who appears to be a "Condran" in this census record and listed a "son" even though he is 3 years older than Annie -- he is indeed Annies brother, and should have the last name of "White." The next lady, "Mammie" is Mary E. (nee Long) White, wife of Edward. I believe the next girl, Ruth age 2, is the daughter of Edward and Mammie. City directories for the same time list Edward, Mary and Sarah with the last name of White and have them living with Annie and Daniel at 104 N. 15th Street., Lebanon, PA.
And just a hunch, but the 2nd border listed, Samuel Beamesderfer, is probably a relative too, since Grandma Sarah White's maiden name is Beamesderfer (per her daughter's marriage application).
Whether her husband Daniel was living at the home at the time or not is not 100% clear from the census, but he was listed as living with the family in the various city directories of Lebanon city at the time. Per Annies marriage application when she married George Barr 6 dated May 1921, she was divorced on 10 Feb 1921, but was still using the surname of "White".
The relationship to the head of household on these people all basically reflect their relationship with Grandma Sarah White, which is why I suggested she was the one speaking with the enumerator.
If you are related to this family and would like additional information, e-mail me direct. I live next to the Lebanon County Municipal Building and have or can obtain records fairly easily.
Hope I didn't confuse you too much, and hope I don't read this posting later and see mistakes...
