Kay - That naming thing happened with the Conkrights - the English got tired of dealing with the patronymic naming system of the Dutch and made them pick a surname. Sybout (son of Harck Syboutszen) was the last of the brothers to assume the surname Krankheyt in about 1715. His brother, Theunis, was going by the name Crankheyt as early as 1704. Jan, their other brother in Sleepyhollow started using the name Krankheyt as early as 1704 also. Jacobus was going by thename Krankheyt as early as 1708. It has been debated as to why the family chose this name because Krank means illness in German - I happen to think it was for a lighter and more humorous reason than most - someone in the family was deformed or sick, etc - I also found somewhere that Krank heyt means sick in the head - so I think the family chose this as a joke upon the British as a way of thumbing their nose at the English for making them pick a name. Perhaps a romantic assumption - however, why would anyone want to be identified as sickly other wise??? I have not done any research on the Shooks, but I will look into it. As of yet, I have not been able to figure out where the DeRondes came from...
