Hi Lyn glad this information is what you have been searching for.
To address some points in your email, firstly I live in a small town called Linlithgow in Scotland (central belt), and I have been researching my family lines for the past 19 years. At present I am writing a book mainly attributed to my own direct line the Mc Cann's who originated in Ireland.
Anyway you asked were the information came from? Well initially my granmother Bessie Alexandra Conquer who kept the tradition that seemed to eminate from the family line of keeping family data. Gran had a small bible page that listed all the Kirk's and she had a written page with all her mothers people the Ward's on it. To top this my Gran could recollect her family back three generations. It is very obvious Lyn that in my research that the Conquers and Kirks were all well educated people and seemed to have a bit of affluence as their occupations in the main were farmers not farm workers. The furthest back Conquer was a shepherd. On the Kirk side and this needs to be confirmed however, Daniel Kirk married a Margaret Telfer from Moffat, now the famous engineer and bridge builder Thomas Telfer came from Moffat?
Lyn the rest of the information was sought out in the registrars of births, deaths and marriages along with the censuses and old parish records held in the Scottish Registry Office.
The Conquer family are located 1814 in Liberton, Edinburgh but during research there is a number of families in East Lothian and Berwickshire although at present unable to confirm a link (some go back to 1650).
The Kirks areall based in parishes in Dumfrieshire. In Moffat old cemetery I found 2 headstones for the Kirk family which gave invaluable information back to the time of the Jacobite rising in 1745.(Again a measure of not being short of a bob or two).
As a side line Lyn you have some kin on your side of the water my granmothers brother Albert Conquer and her sister Christina (Chrissie) emigrated to Alberta, Canada and raised families Conquers and Latimars. My own mother kept in touch up about 12 years ago with a cousin then correspondence stop suddenly?
Speak to you a gain keep in touch.
Kind regards Hugh
