Aretta Mae Laird, 90, of New London, went to be with the Lord, May 9, 2013, at 7:40 a.m. at Beth Haven Nursing Home.
New London--Aretta Mae Laird, 90, of New London, went to be with the Lord, May 9, 2013, at 7:40 a.m. at Beth Haven Nursing Home. Visitation will be held at Salem Baptist Church, Tuesday, May 14, 2013, from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11:00 a.m., church dinner to follow. Pastor Bill Dexheimer will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.
Smith Funeral Home & Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Laird was born, July 26, 1922, in Hannibal, Mo., the daughter of Olie Elmer and Lillie Louise James Cornelius. She was married to Merle R. Laird on September 28, 1940, in Ralls County at her parents' farm home.
Survivors include one son, Alan R. Laird (Linda K.), and one daughter, Lillie Ann Cottrell (Wayne) both of New London; two brothers, Bill Cornelius (Reva) of New London and Glenn Cornelius (Shirley) of Hannibal; three grandchildren, Kevin Laird of Perry, Marty Laird (Jodi) of Ballwin, Mo. and Heather Cottrell of Kirksville, Mo. There are seven great-grandchildren, Ashley and Shelton Laird of Quincy, Ill., Dillion and Evan Laird of Perry, Mo. Brooke Laird and fiancé Nathan Grove of Columbia, Mo., Abigail and Braden Laird of Ballwin, Mo. Also there are two great-great grandchildren, Gus Brinkman and Ashlyn Grove, many nieces, nephews and other loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her husband Merle, two sisters, Virginia Bramblett and Kathren Cornelius, as well as two grandsons, Chad and Kyle Laird.
Mrs. Laird is remembered for being a simple woman who was content and always had a smile and sweet words for everyone. She believed the best of everyone and faithfully prayed daily for them. She had many other friends of her grandchildren who counted her as Grandma also.
She was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church. She will always be remembered for her gentle and kind manner, loving and trusting the Lord for all. She will be greatly missed and always loved. Be at Peace beloved Mother and Grandmother!
