There is a possibility that Thomas Cornell was a son of John(3) and Hannah Washburn, of Success, Hempstead, NY. John Cornell was son of Thomas(2), Thomas(1) Cornell. The 1698 Census of Hempstead records the family of John Cornwell, with wife Hannah, and children John, Elizabeth, William and Edward.
The clue is in the naming pattern of the children of Thomas Cornell and Annatje Wiltsie:
1. Marytje/Mary Cornell, born on 9 Oct. 1821, named after Annatje Wiltsie's mother, Marytje Van Wyck.
2. Jan/John Cornell, bpt. on 12 Apr. 1724 in Jamaica Dutch Church, died in infancy.
3. Jan/John Cornell, bpt. on 29 May 1726 in Jamaica Dutch Church.
4. Anatie/Hannah Cornell, bpt. on 7 Apr. 1728 in Jamaica Dutch Church.
5. Thomas Cornell, bpt. on 24 May 1730 in Jamaica Dutch Church, named after his father.
6. Elizabeth Cornell, bpt. on 29 June 1733 in Jamaica Dutch Church.
7. Catriena/Catharine Cornell, bpt. on 8 Oct. 1735 in Jamaica Dutch Church, probably named after Annatje Wiltsie's sister, Catherine.
8. Hendrick/Henry Cornell, bpt. on 3 Apr. 1738 in Jamaica Dutch Church, a name commonly used in the Wiltsie family, and Annatje's grandfather's name.
9. Sarah Cornell, bpt. on 26 May 1740 in Jamaica Dutch Church.
1. Marytje/Mary Cornell, born on 9 Oct. 1821, named after Annatje Wiltsie's mother, Marytje Van Wyck.
2. Jan/John Cornell, bpt. on 12 Apr. 1724 in Jamaica Dutch Church, died in infancy.
3. Jan/John Cornell, bpt. on 29 May 1726 in Jamaica Dutch Church.
4. Anatie/Hannah Cornell, bpt. on 7 Apr. 1728 in Jamaica Dutch Church.
5. Thomas Cornell, bpt. on 24 May 1730 in Jamaica Dutch Church, named after his father.
6. Elizabeth Cornell, bpt. on 29 June 1733 in Jamaica Dutch Church.
7. Catriena/Catharine Cornell, bpt. on 8 Oct. 1735 in Jamaica Dutch Church, probably named after Annatje Wiltsie's sister, Catherine.
8. Hendrick/Henry Cornell, bpt. on 3 Apr. 1738 in Jamaica Dutch Church, a name commonly used in the Wiltsie family, and Annatje's grandfather's name.
9. Sarah Cornell, bpt. on 26 May 1740 in Jamaica Dutch Church.
If Thomas Cornell was also a son of John and Hannah Cornell, born, say, late 1698 or 1699 in Hempstead, named after John's father, Thomas Cornell, and married a woman from a Dutch family whose children were baptized into the Reformed Dutch Church, it would be logical that Thomas would name his children for members of his family. Conspicuously absent is the name Martin, who would have been named after Annatje Wiltsie's father, but the names John and Hannah might have been named after Thomas Cornell's parents, John and Hannah Cornell. Although Annatje Wiltsie had a brother Johannes, she had no sister named Hannah. Daughter Elizabeth could have been named after Thomas Cornell's sister Elizabeth Cornell, and daughter Sarah could have been named after Thomas Cornell's step-grandmother, Sarah (Earle) Cornell.

Did they move to New Jersey with their son, William Cornell?More Replies:
