The REAL father of Nathaniel, William, Samuel, and Roger of Clay Co KY
I expect to get some serious flack for this, but I can't find a scrap of evidence for a John and Mary Jesse or Elizabeth Mosby as the parents of the Clay County KY Cornetts. But the Library of Virginia chancery records gives proof that these men were the sons of WILLIAM and LUCY CORNETT. This William died bef May 1815 in Scott Co VA.
A dear friend and cousin asked me WHY I thought this; here are my reasons.
First, the names of four brothers--Nathaniel, William, Samuel, and Roger.
Second, the chancery suit is brought by Nathaniel as spokesman for the other brothers and sent to Scott Co, VA. Page 2 of the suit (online) tells the residences of the other heirs, but does not give the residence of the four brothers. It does seem that they are NOT of Scott Co at this time (1815-1822).
Third, William and Samuel's marriages in Wash/Scott Cos show that the Clay Countians were originally from Scott and Washington area.
Four, Nathaniel appears on Wash Co tax from 1788-1805, Samuel 1788-1793, Wm Jr 1788-1791, Rodger 1788-1797, Wm Sr 1788-1810, a John 1800-1810, and Mary 1802-1810. The four brothers do not show up in Wash/Scott Co 1810 Census, but do appear in Clay Co KY. Documents in suit show that Natl and Saml had taxes paid on VA land from Wm Sr's estate. These tax records fit the timeline for when the Cornetts moved thru TN to KY.
Five, and the piece that definitely ties these Cornetts to this family, p 7 of the digital file is a deposition from Clay Co KY: "This day came Lucy Cornett being the widow of William Cornett dec 1815 in Scott County Virginia and testified an oath that this is a true bill given under my hand this 2th of February 1820. R.S. Brashears Justice of the Peace" This was attached to the bill/pages saying Natl, Wm, Saml, and Roger were sons of William of Scott VA.
(So, the mother was in Clay Co in 1820!)
Six, this from the JJ Dickey papers never made sense until now. Article "Jesse Walker Bolling" Benge KY, 1898, "Roger Cornett, son of the original William Cornet, built the house where Hamp Coldiron lives, in 1802, he married Zilpha Callahan...This makes...Cornetts to Kentucky 1796-1799 probable."
That's what I've got.
No one's ever shown me a record for the John Cornett as the father. All I can find are online trees, but no sources. Furthermore, that John was supposed to be born 1712--he's more a grandfather age to Natl, Wm etc, than a father. So, he might be connected on down, but the father of the Clay County Cornetts seems to be William who d. 1815 in Scott CoVA.
PS: Sullivan Co TN was part of Washington Co VA; Scott Co was formed from Lee, Russell, and Washington Cos. Hawkins Co TN is west side of Sullivan Co TN, both border Scott and Washington Co VA.
PSS: The other children of Wm and Lucy named are Fielding & Nancy Cornett Hensley of Scott Co VA, Mary Cornett and James & Sarah Cornett Thomas of Henrico Co VA, and John and Lucy Cornett Brown of Floyd Co, KY. (I have found a Lucy Brown next door to William (of Wm and Rhoda) and Mary Rippee Cornett in 1840 Jackson Co, IN.)
But I still can't verify who my Lusinda's dad is! :( :( :(
