Two Malinda Cornetts
There are two marriages in Harlan County, both naming Malinda Cornett as the bride. The earlier one is for Joshua McDaniel to Malinda Cornett on 6 Aug 1839.They show up in the 1840 census.
The second marriage is for Jarris J. Lewis to Malinda Cornett on 7 Sep1847.(Note: Every researcher calls this guy James J., but based on census data and the birth/death certificates of his children, I’m sure his name is Jarris/JarrettJohn Lewis. He may have also been married prior to a Peggy Jenkins.)
I have seen the women combined into one woman having two husbands. This absolutely cannot be because both women are alive and well, bearing children and raising a family in 1850.I tend to believe that the older Malinda McDaniel is the daughter of Samuel and Polly Davidson Cornett. The younger is the daughter of Catharine Cornett, and granddaughter of Samuel; thus a niece to the older Malinda.
The 1840 census of Perry Co, KY shows Joshua McDaniel and his wife age 20-30, with a male and female under 10.They are also found in the 1850 census of Perry Co.

We will learn later that Johnathan (always spelled this way in the records) was Malinda’s son by a previous relationship.
Also appearing in the 1850 Census of Harlan Co KYis John J. Lewis and his wife, Malinda.

Next door is Jarris John’s brother, Jonathan Lewis and his wife, Atha Ritta (Cornett) Lewis and family.
Clearly there were two separate women named Malinda, and it is incorrect to say that they are both the daughters of Samuel Cornett, or that one woman was married to both Jarris Lewis and Josh McDaniel.
For further proof on this, we look at the 1860 census of Letcher Co, KY
Joshua McDaniel 42 F.L. KY
Next door is Hiram M. Cornett and his wife Jane and family.
It would appear that Malinda Cornett McDaniel had passed away.IN 1850, Joshua and Malinda had a daughter Juda, but no daughter Nancy. This Nancy listed is Joshua’s second wife, Nancy Cornett.
In the 1860 Census of Harlan Co KY, Jarris J. Lewis (and his name looks like Jarris here) still lived next door to his brother Jonathan.

The Kentucky birth and death records have been consulted for verification of these facts. They can be found online at www.ancestry.com.
On 28 Feb 1912, Johnathan Cornett, 77, died in Harlan Co, KY.The death certificate was filled out by his daughter, Hannah Harris, and she states that his parents were Johnathan Lewis and Malinda Cornett. At first, it would seem that this would be the Malinda that married Jarris John Lewis. But one must remember that at this time period, John and Jonathan were not synonymous names. Also, Malinda Cornett Lewis was born in 2 Jun 1826 (according to her tombstone; www.findagrave.com), and that means she would’ve been only EIGHT YEARS OLD when she bore Johnathan.Fifteen, fourteen, you might even convince me a 13-year-old gave birth, but not an eight-year-old.So, how can Johnathan Cornett be the son of the Lewis and Malinda Cornett?
In the 1850 census of Joshua McDaniel’s family, there is a Johnathan age 15—this would put his birth about 1835.Johnathan Cornett’s death certificate gives his birth on 5 Sep 1834.It would almost seem that maybe there was only one Malinda, but some notes online gave a big clue to clear up this confusion.
A Malinda Cornett had a son Johnathan by a Johnathan Lewis. The writer went on to try and combine the two Malindas, but it seems clear that Johnathan Cornett was the son of the older Malinda and a Johnathan Lewis—the brother of Jarris John Lewis! Then the older Malinda went on to marry Joshua McDaniel.
Online trees suggest that both these Malindas were daughter of Samuel and Polly Davidson Cornett, but clearly only one could be.This too may have an answer online. At the page for Malinda Cornett Lewis’s grave site on Findagrave, researcher and descendant Linda Lewis Weissinger states that Malinda was the daughter of Catharine Cornett by an unknown Stamper man.Catharine was the daughter of Samuel.
Therefore, the older Malinda was the aunt to the younger; the older had a son by Johnathan Lewis, and the younger married a brother, Jarris J. Lewis.
Jarres J. Lewis was found in the 1900 census of Upper Poor Fork, Harlan Co.He gave his birth as Sep 1821, stating he had been married 55 years.Malinda gave her birth as July 1825.Strangely, it said she was the mother of no children.According to the Findagrave page, Malinda died 17 Feb 1907, and Jarris (listed as James Jarret) is listed as born 13 Sep 1821, died 2 May 1906.
Death records for S.S. Lewis, died 29 Mar 1931, Hiram C. Lewis, died 27 Dec 1934, and Kathryn Melton, died 20 Aug 1925 in Knox Co, KY, all give the parents names as Jarrett or Jarrett J. Lewis and Malinda Cornett.Daughter Leah R. Smith, died 23 Aug 1927 in Lincoln Co, KY, gives the names Jas.J.Lewis and Melinda Cornett.
Kentucky birth records list Henry McDaniel b. 18 Apr 1854 and Precious McDaniel b. 18 Aug 1855 as the children of Joshua McDaniel and Lindy or Malinda Cornett.Death records of John McDaniel, died 7 May 1916, age 70, lists his parents as Joshua McDaniel and Malinda Cornett.Death records for Clarinda Boggs, died 16 Apr 1950, and Elizabeth Browning, died 1 Aug 1935, list Joshua McDaniel and Nancy Cornett as parents.
