Rebecca Cornetts before 1800 in Virginia
I recently saw several online trees that said a Rebecca Cornett b. 1770 in Henrico Co, VA, daughter of John and Elizabeth Bacon Mosby Cornett, was married to William Britain in 1793, John Chaffin in 1798, and John Elswick Akers before 1820.WRONG!There are two Rebecca's here.In fact, in the information from one of the sites, it gives Rebecca's birth as 1762 in England, then says she was age 78 in 1860 census of Floyd Co, VA.1860 minus 78 makes 1782.I get really frustrated with these bad family trees.
Here's what is proven from the will of William Cornett/Cornutt, died March 1826 in Montgomery Co, VA--Rebecca was married to Jonathon Akers, and was the widow of John Chaffin who died about 1810 in a bear hunting accident. She was the daughter of William and Jane Cornutt. This is William who married Jane Basham, and he was the son of James Cornett married to Sarah Basham.
I believe that John Cornett of Henrico Co, VA was actually born in 1703 in Northhampton England. He was NOT the father of all the children attributed to him, but the GRANDFATHER!John Cornett (who was supposedly married to Mary Jesse and later Elizabeth Bacon Mosby) is probably the father of James Cornett md. to Sarah Basham, thus John of Henrico would be this Rebecca Cornett Chaffin Akers' great-grandfather.
Now, the other Rebecca married William Britain/Britton on 30 Mar 1793 in Henrico Co, VA.I can find no other records that pertain to her.I would however guess her birth about 1768-1775, guessing an age between 18-25.Although she is always listed as a daughter of John Cornett of Henrico, she is more likely to be a granddaughter. It is my GUESS that she belongs to the family of Francis Cornett (probably another son of John) who is listed in the Henrico church records in the 1740s as a grown man.
BUT...there are Chancery court records concerning the Britains and Cornetts in Henrico Co, VA.Alas, they are not digitized yet. These need to be consulted by interested parties as soon as possible.Website is http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/
