Basically, this is how I understand it.
When the Spanish colonized the Philippines, they converted the locals and gave them Spanish surnames.Supposedly, there was an "approved" list of names that people had to chose from, and I suppose that Corpus was one of them.
I think that my father's family is from an area in the north of Luzon, and he says that there are many Corpuses from that area.
I'm not too sure if Corpus was instituted as a name only for the Philippines, because there are a lot of Corpus' from Mexico.Perhaps the same thing happened there as it did in the Philippines.Or, perhaps, there was a lot of trans-Pacific migration from the Philippines to Mexico because of the Spanish galleon trade from 1570 to 1815.But, of course, i'm not too sure.
