Corsby Family in Scotland 1650-1750
My Crosby family is decended from George Corsby who lived in the little town of Hazelside [Hizelside in the Douglas Parish records [Film # 1066588 Frames # 13, 33, 36 & 51]in Lanark Scotland] He was married to Marion Anderson and had children Grizel [c. 4 Dec 1692], James [c. -- 23 1698], John [c. 17 Nov 1699], and Jean [c. 25 Jul 1705]
John maried Marion Weir in Lesmahagow Parish 27 Apr 1721 [F# 1066597 Frame 540] as John Crosby. His son John Corsby married Margaret Weir in Balgrie on 5 Apr 1740 [Lesmahagow Parish film # 1066597 Frame #563].They had a child John Corsbie in Monkstable Lesmahagow c. 7 Feb 1741 who apparently died within the year because they had another son they named John Corsbie c. in October 1792 [Frames 119,121]. The record is poorly kept until a daughter Grizel Crosby is recorded 21 Jan 1751 in Auchtool frame # 141 From here on, the name is usually spelled Crosbie.
There seem to be about a thousand individuals that had their names spelled in this manner from about 1650 to 1750, mostly in the Scottish lowlands. The Crosbie shield was a Gold Cross on a Red Field, the Corsby shield was a Red Cross on a Gold Field.
