Re: Cornelius & Penelope Coughlin VA>WV>IN
Thanks for looking, Ralph.I appreciate the help!I found out that Penelope Jorden was born in Virginia around 1832-37, and Cornelius was born in Cork, Ireland around 1829.(I found them on the census living in West Virginia in 1870 [last name misspelled 'Cathling'] and Penelope "Caughlan" in Indiana in 1880 with children Timothy, Mary, Catharine, John and later Sarah M. "Agnes" Coughlin, my ancestor.)I finally found their marriage certificate online, and they were married in 1862 in Mason County, VA.Cornelius was previously widowed.Cornelius' parents are listed as Timothy and Bridget, and Penelope's dad is listed as John M. Jorden; mother "not known."(I've been unable to find any further information about their parents.)
Penelope lived in Mason County most of her life with (presumed) older siblings George (1824) and Catharine E (1828), along with relative "Ellen Jourdan."I cannot find any of them in the 1860 census.Penelope died in 1888.
I cannot find when Cornelius died, but it was probably between 1876 (when the family moved to Tipton, IN) and 1880, when Penelope is listed on the census as a widow.(His gravestone is in Indiana.)I'd like to find out why they moved to Indiana.I need to make a trip to West Virginia to find additional information, I think!
