Coughlin's in Worcester - circa 1850 - 1900
My ancestors, Mary Lawless Coughlin, wife of Patrick Coughlin, arrived from Ireland with her two young lady daughters, Alice and Abbe, in Mass. probably about 1849-1850.
Family legend says that Patrick was to have accompanied them, but had to stay because of problems with some land that was entailed. The next ship brought word that he was dead and buried.
Alice was married in Worcester, Mass. to William W. Burke, probably around 1850 -1855, and they made their way to Minnesota.
(Family legend says that "they were the handsomest couple in Worcester, Mass." but we have not found a marriage record.)
Abbe apparently stayed in Mass., as my gr-grandmother had an address for her at 16 Chace St., Clinton, Mass. This address was probably from 1885 or later.
We don't know if they came to Worcester simply because so many Irish were there, or if there were relatives there or acompanying them. We have not been able to find any records in Mass. for them at all.
