"What is interesting is the lack of descendants in Europe with this particular spelling."Where did you get this idea?I have documentation on lots of VON GOCHNAT descendants of the Alsatian family in Europe at least into the early l9th century.Families do die out, but there were VON GOCHNATs in Darmstadt, Strasbourg & Zurich in the l9th century.I haven't yet sent Pat all the information that I have.I need more research time in order to link some of them up. I also have much more information from Patrick Schaller, a distant cousin of ours in Colmar, who is related to the VON GOCHNATs and has traced the female lines he could find back to the 14th century. The municipal archives in Colmar has an entire file of correspondence related to the family, some of which dates to the middle of the l9th century. Please see the letters, dating from the 1880s of E. Grome to Rev. Nicholas WERT, a Coughnut descendant, regarding family properties in Alsace on Pat's website.
