Guillaume Couillard, s/o Guillaume Couillard & Elizabeth De Vesin, was a carpenter, seaman & caulker. He went to Canada abt 1613 & was one of the first to settle permanently in the colony. He m. Guillemette Hebert, d/o Louis Hebert & Marie Rollet, on Aug 26, 1621. After the death of his father-in-law, he took over the farming of the land his wife inherited. He was the first person to make use of a plough in the spring of 1621. He worked hard for the colony, took part in the defense against the Iroquois, & frequently piloted boats between Quebec & Tadoussac. He became a churchwarden after giving part of his land for the reconstruction of a church. In Dec 1654, he was ennobled by the King of France because of this services to Canada.
