Re: Sadie (Sarah) Couser - Pensylvania
I will have to ask one of my aunts about the glass blowing factory.Orabout how they ended up in Donora.
Hopefully, they will be able to tell us something.
I know Donora was a steel town.Cant tell that now...all torn down.
I remember being in 7th grade Science class. In our text book was about the 1948 Donora Smog, from the mills. It killed 20 people and hospitalized 7000!I was the only one in the class who had ever heard of Donora, let alone lived there till I was almost 4.
New Eagle is the next town over on Route 51.The town after that is Monesson, where Joe Montana (San Francisco 49ers quarterback) is from. There were some big names from Donora...Stan Musial, Ken Griffey Sr and Jr (Baseball players).
Donora is not a bad town.Too small for my taste. But going back there ever other weekend while growing up was a pain. There were 7 of us in my family. We had to load up the big Ford station wagon and take the 2 1/2 hour drive to Donora. Both sets of Grandparents lived there. My dads' mom had diabetis very bad so they had to go back to take care of her.She passed away when I was not quite 7. I dont remember much about her...sad to say.
The weirdest part, about Donora, was the sirens would go off every night at 10PM for the curfew for everyone under 18!If you were ever caught by the cops, you were in BIG trouble with your parents.Parents of the 1970's were strict! Not like today. If you were out after 10 with an adult, it was no problem.
I'll call my aunts and find out more about Donora.
