George Washington Cowan 1838? Britain-North Carolina
I know that there have been a number of men with the name of George Washington Cowan of Scot-Irish origin. As I have perused the information contained on this site about them, I am unconvinced that any of them is the one I am looking for. Here is what I know about this ancestor:
In the mid-1800's, at age 14, he stowed away on a ship headed for America which left from somewhere in the British Isles.During the voyage he was discovered and became friends with the ship's captain.Upon leaving the boat, the captian gave George an octogonal clock (which I have in my possession).George Washington Cowan married Nancy Teresa Belk, whom I believe was either Creek or Cherokee Native American. They had a son, Abraham Oni Cowan, on 16 Oct 1868, in Statesville, Iredell Co., North Carolina, who later married Margaret Luella Davis.
So, my George Washington Cowan was born somewhere in the British Isles around 1820-1840's and settled in North Carolina.Does anyone know anything about him or how I could learn more?
Thank you all,
David Sigmon
