Deb,I noticed your post of 2009 about the COWAN/ROSS/GARRETT confusion.I think that the confusion came from there being 2 William Garretts in Old 96th District in SC.One is descended from the VA Garretts and the other's parents are unknown, but came from Philadelphia, PA.I think that the 1st one from VA m. Nancy BRAMLETT, not Nancy ROSS.No mention is made in William ROSS's will of a Nancy Ross GARRETT, though the inventory of his will was made by John Lindsey & Isaac Cowan
The Wm. GARRETT, b. 23 Apr 1770, Philadelphia, PA moved to Abbeville, SC w/ his widowed mother, Rebecca, & sister, Jane, ca 1775.She m2 James MCCONNEL in Abbeville, SC.This Wm. was m. 17 Apr 1794, Abbeville, SC to Margaret ROSS, b. 23 Mar 1770, SC. James McCONNEL lists in his Abbeville will of 5 Oct 1790, his wife, Rebecca, & step-son, William GARRETT.William ROSS, also of Abbeville, lists his son-in-law, William GARRETT, in his will, proven 23 Mar 1797.No where in these records is a Nancy ROSS GARRETT listed.I am a descendant of William & Margaret (ROSS) GARRETT & likewise have a record of this information from family letters written ca 1910 & the Hist. of the Garrett Family, 1770-1942 (1942) by Burgess Garrett.I have copies of the Garrett & Ross wills. At http://genealogytrails.com/scar/abbeville/wills.htmlhttp://genealogytrails.com/scar/abbeville/wills.htmlthere is a copy of Andrew Cowan's last will and testament, dated 6 Nov 1786, in Abbeville, Co. 96th Dist., which gives William ROSS as a witness to his signing.
