Re: Strother Cowgur/ MelvinaTaylor
Strother Cowgur and Melvina Porter Taylor were my great-grandmother's grandparents. I have lots of information she collected during the 1960's as well as several photographs.
Melvina Jane Taylor was the daughter of William Walton Taylor and Ann Pratt Young. I don't know if Ann's maiden name was Pratt and she then married a Young. I have yet to prove her parentage.
Anyway...Melvina married Andrew J Porter June 27, 1852 in St Genevieve, Missouri. (I have their marriage record.) She was a widow when she married Strother in 1858 in Grayson, Texas. I haven't found her first husband's death record but I have a narrative in which it says that Strother married "the widow Porter" in Nov 1858 so I assume Andrew died.
As for the family story that we are related to Zachary Taylor, I have heard that many times as well. He was supposedly a cousin. However, I have never been able to prove this connection and it is probably just speculation as many such connections turn out to be.
I hope this answered your question.
