Could there be a connection with your enquiry, as my Hugh COWIE was brother to Archbishop William Garden COWIE?
The family was thus:
Alexander COWIE of Auchterless, Scotland m Elizabeth GARDEN; moved to 3 Marlborough Rd, St. John's Wood, London, to run his own school.They had 8 children:
1. Jane
2. Hugh (1829, Auchterless - 1886, Wimbledon), barrister, Chancellor of Durham, Q.C., etc; m 1859 Septima WARLTERS and had 8 children:
Alexander Hugh Warlters (1860-1933);
Annie Ellen (born 1862);
Emma Jessie Heathfield (born 1864);
Donald William Garden (1865-c.1926);
Lizzie Jean McCrombie (1864-1942) - BOSTOCK descendants in Canada;
Archibald George Gordon (1869-1937);
Robert MacNamara I1870-c.1920);
Hugh Norman Ramsay (1872-1915).
3. William Garden (1831-1902), Archbishop of Aukland; married Eliza Jane WEBBER in 1869 and had six children:
Edmund Mortlock (1870-1952);
John Patteson (1872-1942)
Robert Walpole (1874-74);
Hugh Selwyn (1879-82);
a son;
a daughter.
4. Alexander (born c.1832)
5. Grace M. (born c.1834)
6. George James Webster (1835-1879), lived most of his life in Shanghai, but died whilst visiting Perth.
7. Crombie (born c.1840)
8. Jane (born 1841)
