Think you may have got it backwards:

Robert fathered Peter, who had Shelton, who had Stephen. And I've never seen Stephen's name spelled with a "v"

One of Shelton's sones, I beleive Stephen, but not sure without my books in front of me, had a son named Shelton. This is the Shelton you are talking about in 1880, as Shelton the grandfather died in 1823.

Any help, or am I muddying the waters for you?
