You're so right!I've spent many an hour cursing long-dead census-takers whose handwriting was all but illegible, or (worse) who only bothered to put down people's first initials instead of their names!
If only they knew they would be driving people's descendants crazy many years later!
I've run into the same situation, where I know someone's parent's birthplace is recorded incorrectly.I usually attribute this to the information coming from the spouse or one of the older children.Seems surprising that someone wouldn't know where their spouses' parents were born, but I guess folks just didn't really think that stuff was important back then.I'm glad you already know where William's parents were from, so as not to get led on a wild goose chase somewhere in Iowa!
