I just noticed an additional item in the same article:
"Since Georgia and Virginia threw their pots into the ring years ago, Brunswick County, North Carolina occasionally added fuel to the fire, but no sincere interest has been sparked. For North Carolinians, Brunswick Stew only serves as an accompaniment for- but as a main dish, doesn't hold a candle to- their revered barbecue."
We now know that William Creed, a descendent of Matthew Creed was on the Little River 29 Jan 1820. Little River is at (or forms) the Southern Boundary for Brunswick County North Carolina.
Obviously Descendents of Matthew Creed were responsible for the claims of all three states for the development of Brunswick Stew.
