Re: Creef Family info
Hi, I hope you are still interested in your family.I certainly agree with the two responses you have already received.I am not a member of the family, but I have ancestors who lived in Elizabeth City, NC, so I am a member of the Family Research Society of NorthEastern North Carolina. In their booklet Volume IX, #1, January 2000, there is a little information on someone who is probably one of your ancestors.Page 16:"George Washington Creef (1829-1917) Designer of the 'Shadboat'."(There is a closeup picture of this man - old with a beard) and two other pictures from a distance) Underneath one is the statement "G.W. Creef at work on a shadboat at the creef boatworks in Wanchese on Roanoke Island, ca 1890s.In 1987, NC's General Assembly passed an act designating the shadboat the official State Boat of North Carolina."(I just learned something new; I didn't know any states had 'state boats.')Under the next picture is "The Creef Boatworks in Manteo, ca. 1898.George Washington Creef, Jr. stands on the ways at Creef Boatworks with a crew at work on a North Carolina schoonerThe Creef Boatworks passed through several generations of the family."
I hope you find this of interest.I wish my 15 year old granddaughter would take an interest; even my own children.Everyone will listen (a little) when I talk about our ancestors, but no one really cares very much. Don't ever give up; it is the most wonderful hobby, and the computer is a great help.
