CREELS of Orangeburg District/Colleton C
Hello All,
I would like for Creel researchers to comment on the following census data. There is some data that is not included in Owens AIW. In addition, there are some errors in Owens information. I would especially like comments from Dan and Mike Creel as I know they are active researchers. I would like specific comments on John Jr., William, Richard, Henry and Elijah being the sons of John Creel, Sr. of Colleton Co., SC. I would also like to know if anyone knows how the Creels are related to the following families, BYRD, GRIMES, WATERS, GLOVER. Please pay close attention as to where these families lived as per census records. Forks of Edisto River, South of Edisto River, etc. They all appeared to live in what would be the very northern part of current Colleton Co., south of Orangeburg, not far from Branchville, SC. The Byrd families lived near this town. For Dan, is your William Creel the son of John Creel, Sr.?
Richard Creel first shows up definitely in thein the 1820 Federal Census for Colleton County South Carolina. Creels that are probable direct relatives to Richard show up in the Orangeburg District in 1790. The Byrd family seems to be closely associated with the Creel family and is included in the census data give. It is important to note that the Byrd family also appears in conjunction wioth the Creel family in North Carolina during this same time frame. The census data for Richard and other Creels in Orangeburg District/County and Colleton County are given below. With the exception of the 1790 census data the below information was verified through research at the National Archives in Atlanta, Georgia on 1/30/2001 by myself and Darlene Williams. Some of the data included in Owens book is incorrect and some of the census data was not in included. I would also like to mention that information from geneaology.com contained errors in their transcriptions. Unless you look at the actual census image do not place all of your trust in it.
Colleton County was established as one of the original four counties of South Carolina in 1682.In 1769 the counties were split into seven Judicial Circuits, Beaufort, Camden, Charleston, Cheraws, Georgetown, Ninty-Six and Orangeburg. In 1798 Colleton County was re-formed from part of the Charleston District. The following Census information may hold a key to the parents of RIchard Creel and possibly several of his brothers also. Included in this census information is the Byrd family which I believe the Creel Family married into.

(need to verify inforamtion at National Archives. The following census information was taken from www.geneaology.com. There seems to be many mistakes in geneaology.com census information. To illustrate this I have left the two entries for Nathaniel Byrd below. The entries for the Byrd familes headed by a female contained numerous errors which I have corrected.
