Help from the Scotland Genforum site
I posted my "Creswick of the Borders" post to the Scotland site, also and there are further records found by Larry R.Go to that site and read Message #47593.
We both agree that there only seems to be one Creswick family in the area - possibly in all of Scotland! Since John William's father was dead by the 1881 census and his mother was a widow living with his two sisters, the name of Creswick appears to have disappeared from the area with his moving to America.
I noticed on a Dundee website that the textile industry was flourishing at that time.I wonder if John William's father moved from the border to work in that industry. Also, John Jr. stated he was a tailor on a census in Bayonne.Perhaps he worked in the industry, too.
Of special note is the Tay River Railroad bridge that was built to Dundee in 1878.It collapsed in 1879, killing many people and possibly ruining the economy for a while. This could be a reason John left home.Maybe his father was even killed in that accident!
And why aren't any Creswick's found on the border? The family believes his parents may have raised sheep on the English Northumberland side and taken them to market in Scotland.
