Dear Lois,
Omer and Tommie appear in the 1900 census in the home of William G. Brandon and wife Agnes, and are indicated as step-children, suggesting that Agnes was previously married.[I will post the entry from the Ripley MO census image website separately, as GenForum perplexingly is flagging my transcript as containing inappropriate words, but accepts it individually... most puzzling and unprecedented.]
I note the image is somewhat dark, and the original microfilm is clearer.Note that the children's mother is indicated as from Indiana, which is Agnes' birthplace (as well has her parents). So it is pretty clear that they are her children, and that she has remarried.I note that William evidently also was previously married, judging from the ages of his children who bear his name.
Agnes' marriage to George W. Brandon is indicated in the Ripley Co marriage index as 22 DEC 1899.Since Omer was born in 1893, her previous husband likely was born in 1875 or earlier.Since Tommie was born in late 1895, the previous husband likely died in 1895 or later, but before late 1899.
The only male child of Lafayette Crim who meets this profile is Samuel L. Crim, b. 1875; his mother was Jennie Nations. The only male child of Edley Crim who qualifies is Thomas F. Crim, b. 8 Aug 1869 or 1872, d. 1895.This looks like a good fit, because the Ripley Co marriage index lists a marriage between Thomas Crim and "Agney" Davis, on 28 Dec 1890. This appears to be the Thomas F. Crim shown in my transcript of the 1880 census with Edley Crim in Union, Ripley Co. MO, where Thomas' age was listed as 8.
A significant entry appeared in a Crim listing in the book Ripley County Records-Obituaries in the
Newspaper 1874-1910 by Thelma McManus:p 104Feb 11, 1897The 3 year old daughter of Mrs. Agnes Crim, widow of Thomas F. Crim of Gatewood, died last Monday at 11 p.m.She was burned by fire about 4 p.m. and lived 7 hours. Two sisters one age one year and the oldest age 5 years were present.Buried at Gatewood Cemetery.
All of these dates seem to add up well.It would be interesting to have someone look up the two marriage records, to see if Thomas' wife was from Indiana. Also unanswered, from the child's obit above, is the location of this other sibling, assuming that the one-year-old is Tommie. It would also be interesting to know the child's name who died in 1897.
I would be very interested to know if any of this additional information rings a bell with you.Hopefully, other Crim researchers can help to fill in some of the gaps. Thanks for your most interesting post, "cousin"!
