John CROPPER in Manchester ~1767
I am interested in more information about the following CROPPER family:
John CROPPER, b ~1729 (Lancashire)
Elizabeth CROPPER, b ~1727 (Lancashire)
Margaret CROPPER, b ~1752 (Lancashire)
James CROPPER, b ~1759 (Lancashire)
Joseph CROPPER, b ~ 1762 (Lancashire)
Richard CROPPER, b ~1767 (Manchester, Lancashire)
This family moved to Manchester ~1763; John CROPPER was listed as a "labourer."
The above information was extracted from the 1767 Papist (Catholic) returns sent to the Bishop of Chester whereby Parliament had ordered that there be a detailed count of all the Catholics in England. The Lancashire returns contained a significant amount of detail about each family enumerated.
It is possible that this family was from the Burscough/Ormskirk area of Lancashire. It is also possible that Elizabeth's maiden surname was KERSHAW.Both of these items are only "possibles" and need further research/confirmation.
The Richard CROPPER I am researching later married Alice BLACKWALL (b. 1767 in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales) in Manchester at the Manchester Cathedral in 1788.She was the daughter of Stephen BLACKWALL and Prudence MESSHAM.Alice also had a younger sister, Sarah BLACKWALL, who married Peter REGAN in Manchester in 1795.
Please note that the current version of the Lancashire Parish Clerk project has already been checked, as well as the IGI.Neither contain the birth or marriage recordsfor John and Elizabeth or their children, possibly because this was a Catholic family.
Any information about this family's ancestors or descendants would be very helpful.
