Cassie,
Actually, your grandfather was raised by his uncle, James Henderson Cross and his own mother, Hattie Cross. The first time I have any mention of him is in, like I said, the 1920 Federal Census of Davidson County and he is only 1 year old then. Robert Leo's grandmother, Mary E. (Skeen) Cross died November 19, 1914 in Lexington Township, Davidson County, North Carolina, almost 4 years before he was born. Hattie may have been a prostitute, I can't say for sure. Tomorrow, I'm going searching through the microfiche once again, and see if I can find her obituary in The Dispatch. That ought to be interesting, if not eye-numbing. Since I'm putting together most all of the same information for Walt Cross, when I get his stuff ready, you can send me your snail-mail address and I'll send a copy off to you also.
Well, you have fun in the "Eureka" department. They don't happen very often, but they sure are a bit exhilarating when they happen.
I don't think my wife is a part of this branch of the Cross'. Although it probably should be, as wierd as they are. Not like mine are any better. In mine, it's suicides.
Anywho, CUL8R
