I’ll have to admit that I am quite excited. This is sort of a hobby of mine-helping people on the query boards answer their questions about their Nova Scotia roots.Rarely do I find such a treasure trove ofmaterial.Iactually don’t know quite where to begin.I want to give you all the sites so you have the opportunity to look all this up for yourself. If any of my links don’t work for you, please let me know.
Nova Scotia Vital Stats are available online free at the following site maintained by the Provincial Archives of Nova Scotia
www.novascotiagenealogy.ca
You will need to download a viewer program that is free onsite to see the actual record
If you wish copies of any of the documents there is a nominal charge.

Here you will find David living at home with his parents John and Isabell
(Note-There seems to quite a bit of varience in the way Isabell’s name is recorded.I suspect this may have had something to do with the German accent which was still apparent into the 20th Century is some areas of Lunenburg Co.Anyway sometimes it’s Isabell, sometimes Isabella, sometimes Arabella. The 1881 Census spells it Esibell)

Lunenburg was settled by a group of settlers brought by the British from the Swiss and German States in 1752/53.The Cross’ were of Swiss origin actually. The first seems to be ConradCross (initially spelled Grass by the British clerks) who was born in Switzerland in 1727.He arrived in Nova Scotia as a single farmer age 26 years landing in Halifax on July 24, 1752 on the ship “Betty”.
The very best site for researching you Lunenburg ancestors is
www.seawhy.com
There is enough information there to keep a person researching for months.
The exciting part is that Tancook Island, a few miles off Lunenburg Harbour has some dedicated people determined to preserve the heritage of the German settlers who came there. They have a site online that has all sorts of material on your direct ancestors.
The main site is at
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tancook/http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tancook/
There is a small photo album of old pictures of Cross’s including one of Hurley and his wife in their Sunday best at
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tancook/cross.htmhttp://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tancook/cross.htm
Also a page on the site with a photo gallery of Tancook Island taken by (you guessed it) a distant cousin of yours Donald Cross
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tancook/crossgal.htmhttp://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tancook/crossgal.htm
I'm pretty sure that someone at the museum could put you in contact with someone from your direct family.
With the material from the above sites you should be able to put together quite a family tree.
Happy Hunting
Burdette
