James & William Crothers of RI
I recently found info. in the RI Genealogical register on James and William Crothers written in 1978 by Gerald M. Cruthers,C.A.L.S. It has my g-great grandfather, William Crothers as having come from county Tyrone, Ireland in 1841 and his probable brother James as arriving in 1847. They both eventually bought lots, side by side in Johnston,RI. William entered through NY on 1,Aug. 1841 and later moved to Exeter,RI where my great grandfather, John, was born. He married Ann Brown, dau. of George and Jane who were also born in Ireland. Ann died 15,0CT. 1882 in Johnston,RI. They had five children: Mary J., John, William, Thomas & Elizabeth. According to the 1850 census, William & Ann and the five children were living in Cranston, RI, which still could been the Johnston homestead as the line is close. Some of Jame's children eventually moved to the Norwich area of CT.
I am interested in knowing if anyone has more info. on this family and particularly more on their Irish roots. I noticed that in the 1831 & 1841 census in Ireland there was only a George Crothers listed. Could he have been the father of James and William? Also who were George and Jane Brown, parents of Ann Crothers, who were also born in Ireland? Any information would be appreciated. Thankyou.
