Samantha Whitehurst (Cumby) 1825-1916
I'm new to this Forum. I've read several references in this Forum to my mother's maternal grandmother, SAMANTHA WHITEHURST, b. 11-3-1825 (Alabama), d. 1-9-1916 (Travis County, Texas). She married JOHN W. CUMBY on 1-14-1847, in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and they had, perhaps, 10 children, the youngest being my grandmother, FLORENCE CUMBY (1872 - 1955).I show their other children as WILLIAM L. "LON", CORNELIUS H. "HEBY", RODERICK MELVIN "MATTIE", SUSAN M. "MELLY", CHASTERLETTE S. "STELLA", VINSON F., SAMANTHA, FRANK, and STELLA EUGENIE. Can anyone confirm or correct, with documentation, this information?
Was SAMANTHA's maiden name CULPEPPER?Who were her parents?
As an aside, JOHN W. CUMBY (b. 1812) appears to have had a previous wife and she, perhaps, two children: MARY E. CUMBY (b. 1843) and JOHN M. CUMBY (b. 1845).My grandmother says that JOHN M. CUMBY (the son) was killed in battle at Chickamauga on 9-20-1863.Can anyone confirm this?
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.I've been trying to bring some resolution to this for almost forty years.
