My grandmother said that her grandmother told her that we were first cousins to the General.
At this point I am more confused than 35 yrs. ago when I started this "hobby" ----just! to prove the "first".My greatest question of the lineage of my Custer family is the letter from Nevin Custer, brother of the Gen., to Milo Custer, in which he states:
"Custer Genealogies" Milo Custer, 1944; Pg. XXV-XXVI. Letter of Nevin J.
Custer, (Brother of Gen. George A. Custer) 29 Jul, 1907
Monroe, MI, 29 Jul 1907
Mr. Milo Custer."
29 Jun 1907: Letter of Nevin J. Custer.
When I came home from Ohio and W. VA I found your letter waiting me. Mrs. Gen. Custer sent it on for me to answer if I could. Will say my fathers name was Emanuel Custer. His fathers name was John. He had seven children;
Emanuel Custer, great grandfather, Paul Custer, great great grand father.
Father brother's & sister, James, Alexander, George, Mary, Ellen, & Ann.
Ann b. 1804, Emanuel, 1806. They were married 11 May 1802, Cresaptown, Cumberland Co., MD
N. J. Custer Cresaptown.
(cs note:If anyone has any document to disprove Nevin's statement, I would be sooooo glad to see it.)
(also from my notes--cs:)
srcMilo Custer - Krebs and Fales Land Foreclosure, perhaps in 1834 or 1833,
Tradition asserts that Emanuel lived to be 100 yearsold, dying in 1854, in Maryland, and that he married 2nd, Ann Miller, following Anna Maria's death. His death date and a second marriage are yet to be authenticated ...Milo
Milo Custer wrote, following the publi-cation of his book CUSTER GENEALOGIES, that in light of the discovery of the Krebs and Fales land foreclosure he doubted the accuracy of his reference to the tradition that Emanuel lived
to be 100 and that hemarried secondly, Ann Miller. He concluded that Emanuel died, perhaps in 1834 or 1833, and that he was married only to Anna Maria Fedele."
(Can anyone direct me to the following court document????--cs):
Krebs and Fales Land foreclosure against some of the property owned by him, 17 July 1834; "one Emanuel Custer late of Allegheny Co., whose widow is Mary".
(one researchers info:)
Emanuel Henry CUSTER (Sr.)
(cs note: not nec. "my" anc.---there are no primary records to prove it, as far as I know)

There are plenty of questions as you can see. At the present time, I couldn't even hazard a guess as to my earliest Custer grandfather's country of origin.
