Hi Anne,

I was very excited to see your posting which identified Piety Agree as being married to Richard Darby.I have been trying to identify Piety Darby's maiden name and who she was married to for a number of years. However I'm wondering if the book from which you found the information could be a generation off on the Richard that Piety was married to.Here's why I pose that question:

1. Piety Darby is listed as head of household in the 1860 census of Spartanburg County SC.She was listed as 45 year old which would place her birth about 1815.Living in the household were David (male/22), N.E. (female/19), Eliza (female/17), Frances A. (female/14), and Richard C. (male/13).I assume these were her children.Living nearby as head of household was S.T. Darby (male/22) with Mary (female/20), and Mary E. (female/age 10 months).S.T. could have been another son who had married.

2.I found an obituary in the Spartanburg Herald for Piety Darby which said that she died at Glendale (a small community near Spartanburg) on March 2, 1879.The obituary gave no information about any other relatives.

3.If you accept that this all relates to the same Piety Darby, given that she was born about 1815 and that her children were born between1838 and 1847 she couldn't have been married to a Richard Darby who died between 1820 and 1830.

Is it possible that this Richard Darby had a son named Richard who could have been married to Piety? Is there any more information in the book about the origins of Piety Agree?
