Re: Benjamin Darnell NC/ Illinois
Benjamin Darnell was born May 6, 1780 in Wilkes Co., NC. He married Fanny Viars May 23, 1802 in Wilkes Co., NC. They had the 10 children you mention.
Fanny died March 20, 1847 in Kendall Co., IL (she was born Feb 28, 1780 in Wilkes Co., NC).
Benjamin married Temperance Cartright Potter July 5, 1849 in Kendall Co., IL. Temperance had previously been married to Thomas Potter with whom she had 2 children (perhaps more)...Amanda Potter and Vashni M. Potter. Vashni is my great-great grandfather.
Together (despite his advanced age-Benjamin was 72 and Temperance was about 42) they had one son...Joseph Lonesome Darnell who was born January 12, 1852.
Benjamin died June 16, 1861 and is buried at Sacred Bluff Cemetery (aka Darnell Cemetery) in Kendall Co., IL. Temperance died April 24, 1874 in Brush Creek, Fayette Co., IA. She may be buried near Arlington, Iowa.
My interest in Benjamin Darnell extends from the fact that I'm trying to trace the Potter line. Since my gg grandfather lived with this family for a period of time I'm hoping to learn more about the Potter's through their association with the Darnell's.
In July, 2001 I made a trip to Kendall County, IL and located the Darnell Cemetery. It is in very poor shape...most headstones have been toppled and it is overgrown with small trees and grass. Newer homes are being built near this small cemetery, which is located off a county road in a rural area just above the bank of the Fox River, south of Plano, IL. I fear my next trip will reveal further neglect. Many Darnells are buried here, according to information from the Kendall County Genealogy website.
I have some scant information about Benjamin's parents and siblings, as well as his children. I'm very interested to share what you've gathered. Please email me!
